Our media.

Media magnates – often foreign nationals and UK tax exiles – have huge power to hold politicians to ransom. But should they have that power? Could we be creeping towards a Fox News culture?

Do you want to be on the panel for Reading or Leeds Festival?

NME/Instigate Debate Competition

Do you want to be on the panel for the ID debate at Reading or Leeds Festival?

With mobile phone companies dominating venues, police vetting small gigs and artists, bands forced to endorse corporate products because album revenues have disappeared, festivals costing hundreds of pounds, indie music rarely played on main stream radio, and certain genres totally overlooked and unexplored, our question for Reading and Leeds Festival is:

“Dead or Alive: Can Independent Music Survive the 21st Century?”

What do you think? Are you passionate enough to voice your view at the Instigate event at Reading and Leeds Festivals? You will be on stage with well known musicians, music journalists and an audience of 3,000 music fans. If you can arrange your ideas and thoughts, we will arrange VIP passes for you and a guest.

Jon McClure from Reverend and the Makers said:

"Being on the panel is a two way street because you have the opportunity to make people think, and they in turn affect your opinion. It's a laugh and you can let off some steam. This will bring together all the people that matter in music; journalists, musicians and fans to talk about the music they want to hear and the bands they want to see, and how a counterculture could be a major player in what makes it through. "

To win a place at Reading or Leeds (2 x prizes), please send your question on the above theme via: http://www.nme.com/win/1501

The lay of the land:

1. One competition winner will be selected by ID and NME jointly, for Reading on Friday 28th August, and one for Leeds Festival on Sunday 30th August.

2. Passes for the competition winner and guest will be valid for the entire festival.

3. The competition winner must be prepared to participate in a 1.5 hour live debate at the relevant festival and consent to being filmed by selected media.

4. Competition winners will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the festival.

5. With a deep understanding of the geography of the UK, one winner will be selected from the “more northern half” of the Island, and one from the “more southern half.”

Outlaw output.

In the interests of avoiding the complications inherent in running a .com website including Barclays bank refusing to open a bank account for Instigate because it is “inappropriate”, this will now be the mouth of ID. Welcome.

Posts should be uploaded directly to the Instigate Debate area on YouTube and you can still contact us at post@instigatedebate.com.

Do join up (not “follow”, lead!) and let others know about this. More events coming up, after Reading/Leeds we are going all around the country. Keep posting; that is the beating heart of ID. New prizes will be announced shortly and more house gigs will be performed very soon.
